communications - chapter newsletter
On March 1,1949, the chapter began a newsletter, The Zeta Beta News, for members and alumni. The editors were James W. Lester and Stanley A. Huffman. The oldest issue located in the files was dated October, 1949. This issue featured an article by Dr. Walter Newman, VPI President. Other issues published during that school year were dated May 1 and 17, 1950.
Sammie Weaver became the editor during the following year, 1951. The newsletter was then published semi-quarterly according to the issues located. The May 31, 1951 issue stated that it had been forwarded to every chapter in the nation. The next issue located was February, 1954; no editor was listed. Wayne Cooper, the Alumni Secretary, edited the issue dated March 9, 1955; this was the last issue found in the chapter records for thirteen years.
Not realizing that there had been a previous edition, First Vice President Tom Louthan began a new chapter newsletter in January 1969. The name given to the new publication was APOTIMS --a composite word made up of the first letters of Alpha Phi Omega and the VPI motto, That I May Serve. Pronounced with the accent on the first syllable, all vowels were given the long sound. The newsletter was published again in March and May, 1969, and at the beginning of fall quarter, 1969. APOTIMS became a monthly publication in October 1969. Alumni Secretary R. Bruce Quinnell became editor and published APOTIMS during the 1969-1970 school year. The newsletter and its nameplate or flag was mimeographed; the flag depicted a sketch of the service pin and the newsletter nameplate. The May 1970 issue of the newsletter had a printed nameplate. It featured the name, its origin, and the coat of arms, all printed in royal blue. With that issue, the newly elected Alumni Secretary Bruce Stevens took over as the editor.
During the 1970's, the newsletter changed to a quarterly publication. It has been published continuously ever since, and edited by the Alumni Secretary. APOTIMS is sent to over 1500 alumni around the country, and updates them on ongoing chapter activities.
In addition to an alumni newsletter, there have also been a number of newsletters used for the purposes of getting information out within the chapter. These include short term and long term calendars, the latest gossip and accomplishments of the brothers, weekly reminders and miscellaneous items. Some of these have included The Noise Letter, Not the Newsletter, the Do Rag, and the APO News. As ZB moves into the computerized future, email discussion lists and the ZB Web Page have also become an important method of communication among the active brothers and with the alumni and other chapters.
Due to the restructuring of the Executive Board in 1998, the Publicity Committe, the Public Relations Committee, and the Communications Chair were combined under the Executive position of Communications Secretary.
In the fall of 1998, Amanda Bourne, our first Communications Secretary and Teresa Howard, the Membership Vice President, started a newsletter for inactive brothers. This publication included a calendar of upcoming events and notes from active brothers.
